Thousands of trucks are parked at truck stops –
with their refrigeration units and diesel engines running.

Electricity instead of diesel for trucks at truck stops –

Immediately implementable for refrigeration units and cabin power

Truck-Stop Electrification (TSE) replaces diesel with electricity –
simple, economical and climate-friendly.

– Savings of up to €20 per day per truck with refrigeration unit –

Challenge

Rest areas & rest periods

There are approx. 100,000 truck parking spaces in Germany along motorways and federal highways.

Truck drivers park there for many hours every day to comply with their legally required rest periods.

cause avoidable emissions, noise and costs
when parking due to running diesel engines.

Environmental impact

CO₂ emissions
Operating a diesel engine while parking causes significant CO₂ emissions and directly contributes to global warming.

Air pollutants
In addition to CO₂, large quantities of NOx and PM10 are produced – with negative consequences for climate and health.

Noise pollution
Running engines and generators while parking cause considerable noise – for residents and for the drivers.

Facts about consumption and emissions

Kuehltrailer
Over 10,000 trucks with refrigerated trailers park daily on federal highways with their diesel generators running, as the cargo must continue to be cooled even when parking.
Bild3
Over 120,000 trucks park daily on federal highways, many of them at least temporarily with their engines running to operate equipment in the cab (cabin power) and to charge the battery.
Diesel consumption:
  • 2-3 liters of diesel per hour: Cooling unit while parking
  • 4 liters of diesel per hour: Engine for cabin power at idle
  • 31 liters of diesel per day: truck with refrigerated trailer + cabin power
CO₂ emissions:
  • Approximately 60 kg CO₂ per day: Truck with refrigeration unit while parking
  • Approximately 270,000 tons of CO₂ per year due to refrigerated trailers2/Jahr durch Kühltrailer
  • ca. 340 Tsd. Tonnen CO2Approximately 340,000 tons of CO₂ per year due to cabin power

Savings potential

Refrigerated trailer and cabin power total

Approximately 230 million liters of diesel per year

approximately 610,000 tons of CO2 per year

The solution:

Power connections at truck parking spaces replace diesel during parking

Power column with standard 400V CEE and Type 2 connection

Even with 10,000 electrical connections, savings of:

Approximately 200,000 tons of CO2 per year!!

Good reasons for electrical power points at rest areas

  • Protects the environment (saves diesel, CO2, NOx, particulate matter and reduces noise)
  • The technology is available, economical, and cost-effective for users and operators.
  • It can be implemented quickly and requires less network infrastructure.

Start the implementation now!

1. Policy:
→ Inclusion of Truck Stop Electrification (TSE) in the climate protection program of the Federal Ministry of Transport

2. Funding programs:
→ subsidising investment in CEE power connections at truck parking spaces (cabin power, refrigeration units)

3. Involve the logistics industry and the public:
→ Mobilize support from associations, freight forwarders, media, and society

4. Implement initial power connections:
→ Immediate installation of power connections at resting areas

5. Expand infrastructure across the board:
→ Expansion of power connections at all suitable rest areas
