Connection technology for refrigerated trailers and cabin power

1. CEE connector and charging cable for refrigerated trailers

Over 95% of all refrigeration units are equipped with a standardized electrical connection (CEE32A) as standard. Most trucks with refrigerated trailers have the corresponding charging cables.

Refrigerated trailers can be electrically operated if suitable power connections are available at parking spaces!

Recommendation charging cable:

Power requirement:

  • Cooling units typically have a maximum power consumption of approximately 10–12 kW (3~ / approx. 14 A).
  • For supplying the driver's cab ("Cabin Power"), the power consumption with a 24V/40A charger is approximately 1 kW (approx. 4.5 A).
  • Total combined power: approx. 11–13 kW or 18–19 A

Kabeldimensionierung:

  • For this power range, a cable with a cross-section of 2.5 mm² is generally sufficient.
  • It must be ensured that the permissible continuous load of approx. 25 A (≈ 17.5 kW) is not exceeded.
  • For higher power ratings up to 32 A (≈ 22 kW) we recommend a cable with 4 mm².

Cable type (recommendation)

We recommend an orange PUR cable, type H07BQ-F, because this:

  • is especially robust and abrasion-resistant
  • remains flexible even at low temperatures
  • offers high visibility at rest areas (safety aspect)

Plug standard:

  • Use of CEE 32A (red)
  • This plug is standard on refrigerated trailers and ensures compatibility.

Cable length
Since electrical hookups are not always located directly at the pitch, we recommend:

  • Minimum length: 15 meters

2. Lösungen für Cabin Power

Many truck manufacturers offer an external power supply for cabin power as an optional extra.

Regardless, by installing a battery charger, the vehicle's electrical system can be operated via the external power supply for cabin power and the vehicle battery can be charged.

3. Integration des Batterieladegerätes im LKW

The 230V connection required for operating the manufacturer-specific special equipment of the charger can be provided via an adapter if a 400V-CEE-32A connection is already available – even with cooling units connected at the same time.

Alternatively, the existing power connection on many cooling units can be replaced with a suitable plug.
